National Genographic

I suppose there must be something wrong with me for wanting to participate in The Genographic Project , but the urge has gotten pretty severe over the last year or so.  It’s such a cool concept behind the project.  I can’t buy the kit till I secure employment and lebensraum after graduation (money is a little tight right now) and I certainly can’t ask for it as a Christmas present after my parents spent a fortune on a new bed for my birthday.  Dang.  The lack of this kit is eating away at me.

What’s the oddest thing you’ve ever uncontrollably wanted for Christmas?

Not to be a bahumbug, but I never really liked the idea of getting gifts and Christmas is always stressful as a result. The key reason is that sitting there while opening something that I may or may not actually like while people look on makes me incredibly uncomfortable. Last year, I had to sit there and open gifts with Warren’s family while everyone stared because they weren’t opening gifts till long after Midnight mass, at which point I was going to be in bed sleeping. What I really want for Christmas this year is to NOT get anything - for me that would make the whole Christmas thing so much more enjoyable.

On a funny note, Warren is totally the opposite and LOVES opening presents no matter what they are. Maybe this year I will just make him open all the presents and then we’ll both be happy.

Every year I uncontrollably want people to call it X-mass instead of that other word.

“X-mas” isn’t an attempt to secularize the holiday. (Even bible manuscripts make the substitution of X for Christ.) If you’d rather call it “OMG-SANTA DAY,” though, be my guest. ;)

Anyway, I have a very early memory of wanting a Mr. T Snake Projector. It was a battery-operated film projector that would show you silent clips of Mr. T on the wall. My parents never got one for me. They somehow knew that I’d be thrilled with it for all of 6 minutes before getting tired of, well, Mr. T in general.

Santa Claus day isn’t secularized enough for me as Santa is in reference to Saint Nicholas, who was a catholic saint. Not to mention that OMG has the ‘G’ word in it.
Telling me what the X stood for is like telling a child that there is no Saint Nick. Way to ruin X-mas Mark! :)

Oh, why can’t we all just get along? :-)

    Two things:
    1. According to Tony Robinson of ‘World’s Worst Jobs,’ plus probably lots of other people, Jesus couldn’t have been born in December if the Biblical version of things is true, because December is the rainy season in Judea and shepherds would not have had their flocks out at night and therefore wouldn’t have seen the star of portent or whatever you call the relevant star. Plus, the Roman festival of Saturnalia fell around that time, so when the Christians tried to celebrate Jesus’ birth in March/April, it was very unpopular and it was moved to coincide with Saturnalia instead.
    2. When I was about eight, I wanted the Glow-in-the-Dark special edition Construx set for Christmas. It didn’t happen, and I remember being fairly crushed at dinner and asking my mom whether there wasn’t perhaps an extra box that she had forgotten about somehow. However, they bought it for me completely randomly the following April. I was thrilled… but less thrilled than if I had gotten it when I wanted it. (And: I also wanted many A-Team items when I was very young, but now that I’m older and have watched the series again I can’t…quite… remember why.)

Ahh, I remember when I was about 8 or 10 (don’t remember exactly) and all I really wanted was a carebear. Any carebear would have worked but I got a glow worm instead! I was so upset but at least I got my care bear a few years ago courtesy of my friend Amber. :)

My brother just announced that for Xmas he’d like a couple sheets of aluminum and some aluminum glue. I didn’t even know there was such a thing. I thought you were supposed to weld metal, not glue it. So I’ve learned something new, but I still don’t want to get it for him…

School takes all the fun out of holidays. :-S

Well, I don’t know about the glue… But IGA has a special on aluminum foil this week!
