I don’t remember if I actually put any money in the Rockola along the wall of the lunchroom of St. Albert Catholic High School circa 1995, but this morning I woke up with some very distinct memories of it…
One thing I remember about the Rockola – aside from the fact that it would play those two songs endlessly if you didn’t put any money in it – was some of the collections it had. Not that I can recall anything specific, but I do remember flipping through the selections and going “Why on earth did they combine these twelve songs into an anthology? Who would seriously buy this CD?”
Bah ha ha, I was also going to say that “Spiderwebs” was the third song in heavy rotation on the ol’ Rockola. Funny how that’s burned into our brains, isn’t it?
You’re right! I can’t believe I left out Spiderwebs, considering I’m still a No Doubt fan. (They actually came to Montréal just last Spring. We just bought nosebleed tickets, but if I squinted real hard, I could almost make out Gwen!)
I don’t remember if that picture above is the same model of Rockola that we had at SACHS—but the colour and low boxy shape definitely seem familiar. Do you think it’s still there? Maybe I shouldn’t think about it too much; it’d break my heart to find out that it’s missing, or—worse—still there, forced to play the likes of Miley Cyrus.
I was just trying to think of who might have a sibling in high school that could report back on the status of the SACHS Rockola, but I think everybody graduated. WE IS OLD Y’ALL.

Also, ‘Spiderwebs’ x 1,000,000.
